Nasdaq has expanded its partnerships with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in South Africa and Grupo BMV, the Mexican Stock Exchange group.

This follows the launch of a new modernisation blueprint, developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Adena Friedman, chair and CEO of Nasdaq, says: “Local economies flourish when capital markets are robust, and global investors can confidently channel capital across borders.

“Conversely, a strong global economy is reliant on local markets that are highly dynamic, where innovators can scale and capital can connect. Powering both creates a virtuous cycle of value creation, driving economic growth and wealth generation.â€

The blueprint is designed to empower market operators to cost-effectively modernise their markets while mitigating transformation risk and reducing barriers of entry for global investors to access sovereign capital in market centres.

Nasdaq’s Nordic markets will be the first to adopt the blueprint, alongside expanded modernisation partnerships with the JSE and BMV.

Digitalisation of the Mexican financial market

BMV is a fully integrated exchange that operates cash, listed derivatives, and OTC markets for multiple asset classes, including equities, fixed income, and ETFs.

It also provides custody, clearing, settlement facilities, and data products for the local and international financial community.

The exchange group believes that this initiative will drive a future-ready framework and, in the long run, has the potential to strengthen Mexico’s financial market by fostering innovation, enhancing investor confidence, and promoting a more resilient financial ecosystem.

Jorge Alegría, CEO of Grupo BMV, comments: “Our post-trade technology infrastructure is undergoing a transformative evolution, with Nasdaq playing a pivotal role as our enabling partner, as we look toward the next decade.â€

BMV signed an agreement with Nasdaq in 2024 to modernise its post-trade infrastructure, and the organisation is currently transitioning from a legacy in-house built and managed clearing and settlement platform to Nasdaq’s post-trade technology.

BMV believes that cloud infrastructure will play a transformative role in Mexico’s financial sector, offering flexibility, security, and scalability.

According to Nasdaq, cloud services could play a critical role in enabling real-time advanced data analytics, enhancing operational resilience, and supporting regulatory compliance, as BMV moves towards further digitalisation.

A vision to catapult the South African marketplace

Founded in 1887, JSE is Africa’s largest stock exchange by market capitalisation and among the top 20 largest stock exchanges in the world.

Since its demutualisation in 2005, JSE says it has evolved into a diversified exchange services group, driving growth in the South African economy and bringing greater opportunities to the African continent.

The collaboration between Nasdaq and JSE spans nearly 15 years, with JSE’s clearing and settlement operations being supported by Nasdaq technology.

As the partnership progresses, JSE sees promise in Nasdaq's service delivery model integrated with AWS's infrastructure to establish its position as a model market operator both in Africa and on an international stage.

The blueprint aims to further JSE ambitions to be Africa's gateway to global markets.

Leila Fourie, group CEO at JSE, says: "It's a vision for global infrastructure collaboration, which serves as the foundation to catapult the South African marketplace to a globally connected and accessible market.

“Nasdaq’s vision, based on their long journey with AWS, is compelling, and we are looking to scale a cloud ecosystem to modernise and expand our market operations. This modernisation blueprint paves the way to deepen and enhance liquidity, facilitate capital flows, and drive growth.â€
